Sony A7IV Real Estate Overcast Settings
The Key Setting
Overcast conditions are the ideal exterior real estate shooting environment and most real estate photographers don't fully understand why or how to maximize them. Direct sunlight on a property exterior creates harsh shadows on one side of the building, blown highlights on reflective surfaces, and a dynamic range challenge that requires HDR blending or graduated ND filters to manage. Overcast sky eliminates all three challenges simultaneously — shadows wrap softly around architectural features, reflective surfaces retain detail without clipping, and the dynamic range between the brightest and darkest areas of the exterior falls within the A7IV's single-exposure capability at base ISO without any bracketing required. For exterior real estate shots in overcast conditions a single correctly exposed frame at f8, 1/125s, ISO 100 captures everything from the darkest shadow in a covered entrance to the brightest highlight on a white exterior wall without clipping or blocking. This is the one real estate scenario where the operator genuinely does not need to bracket. Set White Balance to Cloudy to compensate for the blue-gray cast of overcast sky on exterior surfaces — building materials that should render as warm white or neutral gray will appear cold and uninviting under Auto White Balance in overcast conditions. The Cloudy preset adds the warmth that makes exterior architectural surfaces render as they appear to the human eye standing in front of the property. Additionally for overcast exterior real estate use the A7IV's built-in level indicator — go to DISP settings and enable the electronic level. Vertical lines in architectural photography — door frames, window frames, building corners — must be perfectly vertical in the final frame. The overcast flat light reveals any slight camera tilt more clearly than direct sunlight because there are no directional shadows to distract the eye from geometric imprecision.

"The overcast sky eliminated the bracketing requirement. The dynamic range fell within a single exposure. The operator who understood this arrived with one card in the camera and confidence in the histogram. The property rendered as it appears to the human eye. No shadows to dodge. No highlights to recover. One frame. Done."
