The Key Setting

Low light sports is the single most technically demanding scenario in this entire database. It requires simultaneously maintaining a fast shutter floor to freeze motion, a wide aperture to gather light, and a high ISO ceiling to compensate for both — three variables all pushing against each other at their limits simultaneously. The A7IV handles this through one specific setting combination that most sports operators never configure correctly. Go to the camera menu and find Auto ISO minimum shutter speed. Set it to 1/500s fixed — not the auto calculation which will drop too low when the camera misjudges a momentarily stationary athlete as not requiring a fast floor. Then set aperture to f2.8 if using a zoom or f1.8 if using a prime and let ISO float to 25600. The A7IV's full frame sensor at ISO 25600 produces files that are significantly more usable than APS-C sensors at ISO 12800 — the larger photosites gather more light per pixel and produce lower noise at equivalent ISO values. Additionally switch from Face and Eye AF to Zone AF covering the center two thirds of the frame for low light sports. Face detection in low light sports environments struggles to maintain lock on fast moving subjects with low contrast — Zone AF with the A7IV's phase detection covering the zone produces more reliable continuous tracking in dim gymnasiums and indoor arenas than subject detection alone.

Sony FE 70‑200mm f/2.8 GM II
The classic sports zoom for court sports and consistent working distances. f/2.8 gathers enough light for indoor arenas when paired with the A7IV's ISO ceiling. Weather‑sealed and razor‑sharp wide open.
Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM
The definitive low light sports prime. At f/1.8 it gathers nearly three times the light of a 70‑200mm f/2.8, raising your shutter speed floor or lowering ISO for cleaner frames in dim gymnasiums.

"The light is failing. Every other photographer in the gymnasium is dropping their shutter speed. The operator who set 1/500s as the floor before entering freezes the moment everyone else blurs. The ceiling was raised before the action began. That decision was made in the parking lot."
