Sony A7IV Sports Indoor Artificial Settings
The Key Setting
The Sony A7IV has a Sports and Action specific AF setting that most operators never find — AF Tracking Sensitivity. Go into the camera's AF menu and find AF Subject Shift Sensitivity. Set it to five out of five for sports work. This tells the camera to aggressively pursue and reacquire moving subjects rather than holding lock on a static position when the subject briefly exits the frame or is obscured by another player. At the default middle setting the camera hesitates when a subject is briefly blocked — at maximum sensitivity it immediately pursues the subject when they reappear. In basketball, soccer, or any contact sport where players briefly obscure each other this setting is the difference between a sharp reacquisition and a missed frame. Set it to five before every sports session and never touch it again for action work.

"The moment exists for a fraction of a second. The operator who specified 1/1000s before raising the camera captures it. The operator who raises the camera and then adjusts does not. Specify everything before the action begins. Then disappear into the pursuit."
